(Better: Adobe Flash CS4 crashed twice while I threw this together.)

Gott stöff. Fullt af góðum punktum hjá Steve Jobs.

I’m calling it now: The laptop starts dying tomorrow.
IT’S HAPPENED BEFORE
As someone in both the photo and the tech world, I’ve seen (and spoken about) the point and shoot camera’s declining relevance.
Ten years ago, they couldn’t make those thing fast enough. Then one day someone put a camera into a phone.
It took a while, but the cameraphone has slowly, quietly, and almost completely replaced the point and shoot for many people. Cameraphones are simpler, more convenient (smaller) and, for 99% of situations, they are good enough.
When you need a really great photograph you use an SLR. The rest of the time, you use a phone. The point and shoot is dying, relegated to a niche middle ground.
IT’S ABOUT TO HAPPEN AGAIN
The same’s about to start happening in the computer hardware market. Laptops have always been a compromise solution. They’re awkward and unergonomic, slow compared to their desktop counterparts, have poor battery life, and are just as complex and confusing to operate as their larger brethren.
Enter the iPad. Simpler, more convenient, and for 99% of uses, good enough. See a pattern?
Yes, the first version will be flawed. Yes, it will be hard to tear your beloved laptop out of your hands. Yes, it won’t live up to all of its promises. Yes, it will take time. Maybe years.
And, like your cameraphone, it’s going to sneak up on you. But one day, pretty soon, you’ll realize that you haven’t used your laptop in days. That you tend to grab your iPad first whenever you need to visit a website or answer email. That your laptop never leaves your desk anymore.
It starts tomorrow.

I can’t agree with this statement/prediction completely. There are certain situations (like concerts) where you don’t want to lump around a DSLR but you still want to get some decent photos so you bring your point & shoot which has better ISO, optical zoom, image stabilizer, etc. - cameraphone vs. point & shoot.

Skipping the laptop completely… I don’t see it. For example, musicians that use their laptop when performing live, I doubt they’ll be bringing their huge desktop computers to a show - and they’re not going to run Ableton Live (or Logic or whatever) on the iPad / Tablet.

For some users a cameraphone or an iPad might be enough but definitely not everybody.

iShoot == Scorched Earth

marco:

The hit new iPhone game, iShoot, is great. But it is not a clone of Tank Wars or Worms, as many review sites are saying.

It’s very clearly a good port of my favorite old DOS game: Scorched Earth.

I care so much because this is an excellent game, and I have a bit of a history with it: I’ve spoken to the (very nice) author before and I’ve tried to port it to every platform I’ve ever coded graphics for (including C and C++ using OpenGL, DirectDraw, Direct3D, SDL, DHTML, and the iPhone before the SDK using Javascript and a <canvas> tag) and given up every time, because making a tech demo with animation and ballistics and falling terrain and 3D tank models loaded from .obj files is a lot of work but nowhere near the amount of work required to make it into a full game.

Tiff even made me a Scorched Earth pillow in college, having never seen the game but finding screenshots online, because she knew I liked it and was working on a remake. (I ended up using that sample code and basic playable demo to land my first real job.)

iShoot isn’t a complete port: it’s missing shields, guidance, fall damage, and many of the obscure weapons (notably napalm, which is primarily useful against shields, so I guess it’s OK to leave out if shields aren’t included). But it’s very well done, and I definitely would have spent more than $3 on it.

OK, núna verð ég að fá mér iPhone eða a.m.k iPod Touch. Scorched Earth er náttúrulega snilldar leikur, maður spilað hann ósjaldan back in the days… Síðan hef ég lengi verið að leita að gömlum Macintosh leikjum eins og þythokkíleikurinn þar sem skjárinn “brotnaði” hjá manni, lyftuleikurinn þar sem maður var á hóteli eða eitthvað og síðan leikurinn þar sem gaurar hoppuðu út úr þyrlu og maður átti að grípa þá með hestvagni fullan af heyi. Good times, good times…
